Street Fest at Union Market District Showcases DC’s Creative Community

Curated Shows, Talks, Pop-up Galleries, Installations and Walking Tours; UMD’s Art Gallery Walk runs from May 29 through June 8

Washington, DC—Kicking off Union Market District’s two-week Street Fest, DC’s creative community and honored guests take center stage in a curated series that highlights and celebrates the role artists play in conversation and their essential contributions to inclusive placemaking. The Art Gallery Walk runs from May 29 through June 8, with additional events and experiences at specific dates and times.

CURATED SHOWS:

Brooke Fierce Bronner / Played and Passed Down
A bold collection from one of DC’s rising contemporary voices, on view at Chela Mitchell Gallery. Brooke Fierce Bronner was born in Brooklyn, raised in Asia, trained in business and rescued by painting. Her work mostly focuses on the relationship between the individual components of a thing and the overall structure that it presents at its face.

La Cosecha / Salvador Rubio
Featured in Balcòn is DC-based artist and muralist Salvador Rubio Rivera’s “La Neta.” Rivera’s debut solo show is a collection of stunning portraits of his Latin community in a fusion of art history, pop culture and his Mt. Pleasant neighborhood. Rivera’s work is expressed through acrylics and mixed media, and vibrant airbrush works.

ArtCor Presents: The Conversation Pit ft. HOOD CENTURY
A participatory installation that invites visitors to step inside a living work of art, where the boundaries between audience and artwork are blurred and every conversation becomes part of the experience. “The Conversation Pit” kicks off on Friday, May 30 at 6:00 pm with Jerald Cooperof HOOD CENTURY in a conversation on Black Modernism, marking his first DC appearance. On Saturday, May 31 at 6:00 pm, cultural worker, writer, and Professor Maleke Glee will lead a talk on the intersection of art and visual communication. Additional featured artists include Bria Edwards, Omari Jesse and Maurice Wright.

Creative Theory / Gallery of Disruption + Street Portraits Pop-Up
Experience the intersection of street art and community at the “Gallery of Disruption,” a dynamic wheat paste installation spotlighting some of DC’s boldest visual voices. Open all weekend, the gallery kicks off with a preview night on Thursday, May 29, offering the first look at the StreetPortraits Pop-Up—an evolving series that captures the spirit of Union Market District through spontaneous, on-the-ground portraiture. Return Saturday to see new moments added in real time, transforming everyday interactions into a living, visual record of the neighborhood.

Clarence James & Halim Flowers / Syncopation
“Syncopation” is a collaborative art exhibition created by Clarence James and Halim A. Flowers, featuring recent and historical works by both artists exploring identity, freedom and expression. A centerpiece of the show is the premiere of a new documentary co-produced by Flowers titled “Super Predator to Super Hero” that serves as an epilogue—nearly three decades later—to the Emmy-winning HBO documentary “Thug Life in DC,” in which Flowers appears as a young man serving a life sentence in prison.

Maggie O’Neill / Forever Fearless
“Forever Fearless” is a bold debut exhibition featuring 17 DC-based artists, each reimagining a statue as a symbol of courage, justice and transformation. Presented by Our Daughters’ Futures Fund (ODFF), the collection of original sculptures serves as both a public art statement and a proof of concept—a grassroots model that uses art as a tool for connection, education and civic engagement.

AutoShop / Brooke Einbender’s The Unknown Zone
Step into “The Unknown Zone,” an immersive pop-up exhibition by Brooke Einbender, aka Mindbender. Suspended from the ceiling, reclaimed doors are transformed into kaleidoscopic portals that glow with shifting color and light. The installation invites reflection on transformation, thresholds and the unseen worlds within and around us. The experience also includes an artist talk, a writing workshop and a community art-making session.

Masseria / Sculpture Garden by Dan Steinhilber
In collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Nicholas Stefanelli, sculptor Dan Steinhilber transforms the courtyard of Masseria into a temporary sculpture garden featuring new work. Known for his large-scale installations that repurpose everyday materials, Steinhilber’s work has been exhibited in major museums and art spaces across the country.
