WASHINGTON, Dec. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Union Market announces the newest retailer to join the Northeast district: Blue Bottle Coffee. The Oakland-based company is dedicated to the simple purpose of getting delicious coffee to anyone who asks for it. Blue Bottle will open in Union Market with a 5,000-square-foot cafe and training center, at the corner of Morse and 4th Street NE. The cafe is scheduled to open in late-Spring 2017.

The Union Market location will be the first Blue Bottle Coffee to open in D.C. The spacious location will span two floors and include a public cafe, training lab, classrooms, and offices. It will serve as a central hub for nearby Blue Bottle cafes that are scheduled to open later that year.

The company is excited to bring its expertly sourced coffees to the neighborhood. In the words of Bryan Meehan, CEO, “we’re thrilled to join the Union Market community and look forward to joining the other craft retailers there. D.C. is such an interesting cultural and political hub—we’re expecting a fast pace and vibrant cafe environment. And we can’t wait.”

Blue Bottle’s new training center and cafe is the latest event signaling Union Market’s role as one of the most dynamic emerging districts in the country. Recent announcements highlight Union Market’s place as a hub of inspiration and creativity as well as business growth and job creation. These include Trader Joe’s upcoming opening at the Edison; the introduction of DC’s first rum distillery and bar at Cotton & Reed; Masseria—under the direction of local chef Nick Stefanell—receiving one of Washington’s first Michelin stars; West Elm’s pop up at Lab 1270 featuring local artisans and their “Makers Residency Program”; and the debut of the compelling art installation of the We Love You Project from photographer Bryan Summers.

About Blue Bottle Coffee: In the early 2000s, in Oakland, California, a slightly disaffected freelance musician and coffee lunatic, weary of the commercial coffee enterprise and stale, overly roasted beans, decided to open a roaster for people who were clamoring for the actual taste of fresh coffee. He named his business Blue Bottle Coffee and began another chapter in the history of superlative coffee. Now, nearly 15 years later, and thanks to the enthusiastic support of many loyal guests, Blue Bottle Coffee has grown to a small network of cafes, an espresso cart, the occasional pop-up, and a small fleet of Loring roasters. We are still united by the simple purpose of getting great coffee to everyone who asks for it. Improbably and delightfully, there are hundreds of us now.
