Washington, DC—Mark your calendars! It’s never too early to start planning for the winter holidays, especially one with so many opportunities to gather in celebration while supporting your favorite local businesses. Beginning with Union Market District’s 8th annual Thanksgiving turkey drive with Harvey’s Market and extending through Hanukkah and Christmas, we are the go-to place for unforgettable holiday experiences. There’s a little something for everyone, plus the opportunity to give back to communities in need.

But wait, there’s more! Union Market District’s Holiday Gift Guide returns this year, featuring a curation of more than 50 gift ideas for spreading joy that are as unique as the neighborhood’s independently owned shops and eateries.

KEY DATES

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive – November 8–November 17
Harvey’s Market is the spot in Union Market to purchase a Thanksgiving turkey for families in need. This year, we’ve partnered with churches in Wards 4 and 5, including Calvary Episcopal Church, Israel Baptist Church, New Samaritan Baptist Church, Purity Baptist Church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Quarter, half and full turkeys will be available for purchase at Harvey’s Market now through November 17.

Nalls Christmas Tree Farm – November 19–December 19
Nalls Farm Market, family owned and operated for more 60 years, is back at Union Market this year. Come shop Christmas trees, garland and more on Neal Place.

Small Business Saturday – November 27
The most wonderful time of the year for shopping small and supporting local economies. Year-round, Union Market District hums with entrepreneurial energy and the weekend after Thanksgiving will be no different: peruse one-of-a-kind products and curated selections from more than 40 independently owned businesses and emerging brands. Come for the goods, stay for art, entertainment and conversation.

Menorah Lighting – November 28–December 6 (Every night at 5:30pm)
Hanukkah Baskets – November 28 + December 3 (3-6:30pm)
This Hanukkah season, don’t miss your chance to get all of the best Hanukkah goodies from some of your favorite Union Market retailers. Each basket will include a selection of dishes for two people:

  • Chopped Liver, Harvey’s Market
  • Rye Crostini, Ravenhook Bakery
  • Goat Cheese Spread, The Creamery
  • Latkes, Buffalo & Bergen
  • Lox, District Fishwife
  • Smoked Whitefish, Neopol
  • Sufganiyot, District Doughnuts

A portion of proceeds will be donated to support the Edlavitch DC Jewish Community Center. The basket will contain Reservations will go live on Wednesday, November 10.

Friday Night Holiday Light Show @ Neal Place – December 3–December 17
Join us on Neal Place at Union Market for weekly holiday light shows in partnership with the Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Each Friday night beginning at 5pm, guests will experience a festive light and music show starting. Revelers can also participate in ornament decorating and sip on specialty hot cocktails from Suburbia! All donations from the evening support the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission.

UMD’s “All is Bright” Weekend – December 17–19:

  • Friday Night Holiday Light Show @ Neal Place @ 5pm
    The final countdown: celebrate the holidays with the King and Queen of Christmas, Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey. Light show begins at 7pm.
  • Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC @ Neal Place – December 18 @ 1pm
    Join us for a holiday show with The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC sings to inspire equality and inclusion with musical performances and education promoting justice and dignity for all.
  • Full Moon Sound Gong Session @ Dock 5 – December 18 @ 7pm
    Join Sound Wellness at Dock 5 for a special evening in celebration of new beginnings. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation infused with vibration, followed by a gong-sound meditation session. Combined, this experience will allow you to go deeper and realign your energy for a lighter, more elevated existence.
  • Clear Harmonies Carolers – Neal Place – December 19 @ 6:30pm
    The Clear Harmonies Carolers perform a mix of traditional carols, modern holiday favorites and surprising arrangements of well-known songs.
