We always have the big picture in sight, but continue to focus on making a measurable, positive impact on the well-being of our employees, our retail partners and the communities where we operate.
EDENS has been 100% carbon neutral in all common areas since 2015, and we plan on being carbon neutral for all our buildings by next year. We require our tenants to be carbon neutral in our leases and continue to educate our retail partners on environmentally friendly practices and materials that not only save money but reduce greenhouse gases and carbon emissions.
Since 2022, we reduced common area energy consumption by 831,000 KWh. This 4% reduction is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from driving 1 million miles. Installing high-efficiency fixtures and smart controls at 110 properties has reduced maintenance costs and consumption while improving lighting quality and customer comfort.
Business acumen can go together with a dedicated sustainability program. We strive for community wellbeing by designing environments that foster civic pride and healthy human connection.
Our alternative fuel consumption includes electric vehicles for security and guest shuttles. We have 157 charging stations across 25 properties. Since 2015, we’ve annually purchased Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to offset our environmental impact.
A REC represents the environmental attributes of 1 MWh of renewable energy. Our purchase of 236,404 MWh has offset 179,581 tons of CO₂, equivalent to 18.3 million gallons of gasoline or the greenhouse gases from over 35,500 vehicles. This signifies our common area electricity is from zero-emissions sources like solar, hydropower and wind.
