Created exclusively for Washington, DC and Union Market, Yoko Ono’s new work “RELAX. YOUR HEART IS STRONGER THAN WHAT YOU THINK !” compels us to step outside of our everyday lives and consider the power of the heart over the restrictions of the mind. Said Yoko Ono of her inspiration, “I hope our hearts will be stronger and stronger forever.”

In partnership with the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the installation celebrates the inaugural project of Hirshhorn in the City, a new initiative to exhibit international contemporary art beyond the museum walls and connect artists and curators with Washington, DC’s creative communities. “Yoko’s work has a longevity because the pieces are not immediately consumed and they continually work on the mind,” explained Mark Beasley, the Hirshhorn curator who organized the show.

At Union Market, free public art is used to tap into the power of art to spark conversation, see another’s point of view, share a defining moment and to simply appreciate creativity. When added to that the exchange of images with social media, a connection to a place is created a collaborated conversation that everyone can be part of whether it is private or public.

The work has been shared digitally by thousands of admirers, including Yoko Ono herself, who has more than 5 million followers on social media.
